Best Fiber Supplements for Constipation: Compare 4 Options

Compare psyllium, Metamucil, Citrucel and Benefiber by evidence, ingredients, format and limitations before buying.

6 min readEducational guidance

Quick Answer

For adults considering a fiber supplement for constipation, psyllium is the best-supported starting ingredient among the fibers evaluated in the 2023 AGA/ACG guideline. That is an ingredient-level conclusion, not proof that one brand beats every other brand. Fiber may help, especially when dietary intake is low, but it can also cause gas and is not appropriate for every cause of constipation.

Below we compare Metamucil, Citrucel, Benefiber, and plain psyllium by ingredient, format, and practical drawbacks. This is a source-based buying guide; we have not conducted hands-on testing or a head-to-head clinical trial of these products.

How we evaluate options

We prioritize evidence for constipation, a clear ingredient label, ease of following directions, and limitations relevant to bloating. Manufacturer pages establish product identity and directions; they are not independent evidence of effectiveness. Product details were checked on September 5, 2026. Formulas can differ by country and product variant, so check the package you will actually buy.

Plain psyllium huskPsyllium powder; check the individual labelA way to choose the ingredient with the strongest support in the guideline without a multi-ingredient blendTexture and mixing may be inconvenient; fluid directions matterHow much dietary fiber is in a serving, rather than just total powder weight?
Metamucil Sugar-Free Orange SmoothPsyllium powderA flavored option using psyllium, with explicit mixing directionsThe selected variant contains phenylalanine; psyllium allergy and medicine timing warnings applyDoes this exact formula fit my ingredient restrictions?
Citrucel Fiber CapletsMethylcellulose; 1 g per two capletsConvenient if you dislike mixing powderMore caplets are needed for a larger dose; constipation evidence should not be assumed equivalent to psylliumIs the pill count practical, and can I safely swallow it with enough liquid?

What the constipation evidence does and does not show

The joint AGA/ACG constipation guideline suggests fiber supplementation for adults with chronic idiopathic constipation. Its full evidence review notes that only psyllium appeared effective among the evaluated supplements, with limited and uncertain data for others. The recommendation is conditional and evidence certainty is low.

This does not mean psyllium works for everyone, that every form of constipation is caused by low fiber, or that all other fibers are ineffective. It also does not establish one commercial brand as the clinical winner. For IBS, separate guidance favors soluble over insoluble fiber; IBS and chronic idiopathic constipation are not interchangeable diagnoses.

Which option fits constipation with bloating?

If hard stools and low dietary fiber occur together, a simple psyllium product is a reasonable option to discuss with a clinician or pharmacist. If bloating is the main symptom and stool frequency is normal, adding more fiber may not address the cause. Read constipation and bloating and why fiber can cause bloating before buying.

A powder with many prebiotics, herbs, enzymes, and sweeteners makes it harder to identify which ingredient helps or causes discomfort. Prefer a transparent label and change one thing at a time. There is no universally gas-free supplement and no reason to interpret worsening pain as a necessary “detox.”

Buying criteria: compare the label, not the tub

  1. Identify the fiber. “Fiber blend” or “gut support” alone does not tell you the active ingredient.
  2. Compare dietary fiber per serving. A scoop's powder weight can include flavorings and other ingredients.
  3. Check the format. A large container is not necessarily cheaper per usable serving. Capsules may require several pills.
  4. Read mixing, allergy, and medicine warnings. Ask a pharmacist about your specific medicines rather than applying one interval to every product.
  5. Check the exact market and variant. A brand name can cover different ingredients, sweeteners, and serving sizes.

For a simple cost comparison, divide the price by the number of servings you would actually use. Compare only like-for-like serving amounts. We do not publish a “cheapest” ranking because retailer prices and package sizes change.

How to start and assess fit

Follow the selected product's label and fluid instructions. Do not swallow dry psyllium powder. The Metamucil page directs users to mix with at least 8 oz of liquid and drink promptly; it also advises medical review when constipation lasts more than seven days. Citrucel advises consulting a physician for use beyond one week. Do not replace these instructions with a generic 14-day self-treatment protocol.

Track stool comfort, frequency, and unwanted effects. Increase dietary fiber gradually and include varied foods. Our fiber intake calculator provides a rough food-pattern estimate, not a diagnosis or a supplement dose. The high-fiber food guide helps you explore food sources.

When to seek medical care

Seek prompt medical advice for persistent constipation, rectal bleeding, blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, or continuing abdominal pain. Severe pain with vomiting or inability to pass gas needs urgent assessment. Difficulty swallowing or a suspected bowel blockage makes self-directed bulking fiber inappropriate. See NIDDK's constipation guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Is Metamucil better than Benefiber for constipation?

Psyllium has stronger support in the cited constipation guideline than an assumption that all prebiotic powders work equally. That favors evaluating the ingredient, but it is not a direct clinical comparison of these two brands.

Is a capsule safer than powder?

Not automatically. Capsules and powders both have directions and swallowing precautions. Choose a format you can use correctly, and seek advice if swallowing is difficult.

Do I need a supplement if I eat enough fiber?

Not necessarily. A persistent bowel problem despite adequate intake is a reason to investigate other causes rather than keep increasing fiber.
